Circulation Policy
Books
Books are loaned to undergraduate students and community members for 21 days, and may be renewed throughout the semester (Summer, Fall, and Spring) unless another patron has placed a hold on that title. All items must be returned at the end of the semester.
Books are loaned to graduate students through the end of the semester. All items must be returned at the end of the semester, but may be checked out again at that time for the following semester. Doctoral students who have attained candidacy and are maintaining residency may contact [email protected] to request renewal without physical return of materials.
Faculty and staff borrowing policies are posted here.
Audio-Visual Materials
AV materials, which include Blu-ray, DVDs, CDs, videotapes, and audiotapes circulate for 7 days. Items may be renewed unless a hold has been placed on the item, and renewals are limited to 10.
Reserve Materials
Reserve items are checked out on an hourly basis. Since the time period varies for each reserve item, please check the slip printed with each check-out to find the exact time a reserve item is due. The information included with each item gives the length of the borrowing period and indicates if the item is allowed to leave the library. Failure to return a reserve item to the circulation desk by the designated hour will result in a fine of $1.00 per hour per item.
Recalled Materials
If all copies of an item are checked out, a MeLCat or interlibrary loan request should be placed. If a patron's need for an item is urgent, a librarian can place a Recall request on a checked-out copy. Any item that has been recalled will be given a new due date that is 3 days from the date the item is recalled. Books will only be recalled if the current borrower has had them checked out for a minimum of 3 weeks.
Interlibrary Loan and MelCat Materials
MeLCat and interlibrary loan services are available for Hillsdale College faculty, staff, students, and Academy students. More information is available about MeLCat and ILL.
Overdue and Lost Materials
Mossey Library is now fine free. Fees for lost or overdue materials are included in our Lost or Damaged Materials Policy.
Registration/Transcripts
Unpaid fees may result in suspension of borrowing privileges, and may cause student transcripts to be held.
