Archives and Special Collections

Can I view materials from the library's archives and/or special collections?

Items from the archives and special collections must be used in the Archives Reading Room, which is open Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5 PM and located on the first floor of the library. To request items in archives and/or special collections, contact the Archives and Special Collections Librarian.

How do I view articles from past Collegians or old Winona yearbooks?

Mossey Library has digitized many items from our collections, and we are in the process of adding to our digital collections, including online access to past Collegians and Winona yearbooks. If the material you need access to is not available online, please contact the Archives and Special Collections Librarian. Some past issues of the Collegian and Winona yearbooks are also available in the library's print holdings and can be found in the library's catalog.

Audio-visual Materials

How are the audiovisual materials organized? 

Audio-visual materials (i.e. Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, etc.)  are organized by accession number. The higher the number, the newer the item. To search for specific items, check the library's catalog.

Does the library have media players for audio-visual materials?

The library has media players for all audio-visual materials in the library, including non-US region materials, audiotapes, and VHS tapes. Individual media players are available on the tables in front of the AV stacks. An all-regions Blu-ray player is available on a cart on the second floor of the library and can be used for small group viewing of Blu-rays and DVDs.

Do you have audiobooks?

Audiobooks on CD are located in the Spoken Word collection in the library. Streaming audiobooks are available through Overdrive and Naxos Spoken Word Library

Do you have streaming video?

Mossey Library subscribes to several streaming video services. A list of the services can be found here.


 

Books

Where can I find items on reserve?

Textbook reserves and materials placed on reserve for specific classes are available behind the Circulation Desk. Materials in these collections have a shortened due date, and fines are issued on overdue reserve items. For more information on reserve items, check our circulation policies.

Where can I find the newest books in the library's collection?

The New Books section in the library consists of books that have been added to the collection in the last month, and it can be found on the shelves wrapped around the outside of the Dow Special Collections Room located at the back of the first floor.

Can I check out reference books?

Reference books may be used in the library, but they cannot be checked out.

How do I access an item in the locked shelves?

Contact the Archivist and Special Collections Librarian for help with items in the locked shelves.

Where is the PZ section?

The PZ section is the Children's Literature section, and thus, is separated from the normal sequence of shelves. It is on the second floor at the beginning of the range of shelves to the left as you descend the front stairs, between the individual study rooms and the oversize section.

How many eagles are in the Heritage Room?

There are 23 eagles in the Heritage Room

Journals and Articles

Can I check out newspapers and/or magazines?

Newspapers, magazines, and other print periodicals may be used in the library, but they cannot be checked out. 


 

MeLCat and Interlibrary Loan

When will the item I requested through MeLCat or interlibrary loan get here?

You will receive an email confirmation when your item arrives. Physical items requested through MeLCat or interlibrary loan generally take 1-3 weeks to arrive. Digital materials such as articles or book chapters can often arrive sooner, generally 1-2 weeks. Check our MeLCat and interlibrary loan page for more information about these services.


 

Office Supplies

Do you have supplies available at the library?

Staplers and a three-hole punch are available for use at the Circulation Desk. A paper cutter is available in the copy area behind the Information Desk. Additional supplies such as whiteboard markers, rulers, scissors, colored pencils, highlighters, etc. can be checked out at the Circulation Desk for 3 hours at a time. 


 

Printing and Scanning

Can I scan items at the library?

The library has a book scanner located by the archives area on the first floor of the library. The public printers also have scanning capabilities, though they are best suited to loose-leaf paper.

Recommend and Donate

Can I recommend an item to be added to the library's collections?

Send an email  to recommend that an item be added to the Mossey Library collections.

Do you accept gifts of books, DVDs, CDs, or other items?

If you want to donate items to Mossey Library, please refer to the Gift Policy page.


 

Renewals

How do I renew items?

You can renew items online through your library account. For more information on renewing items, check our circulation policies.


 

Can you answer my question about...?

 Librarians are happy to help with any questions you may have, especially pertaining to the library, its services, conducting research, finding information, etc. Librarians can provide some readers advisory, i.e. suggest books for specific interests and personal reading, as well.
